WHAT IS RODAN AND FIELDS, EXACTLY?

Rodan and Fields is a pricey skincare line that is aimed at helping with anti-aging, skin discolorations, sensitive skin, and acne. Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields, the creators of the well-known Proactiv Solution , created the Rodan and  Fields skin care line in 2002. They initially sold these products exclusively in top-tier department stores.

As Rodan and Fields skin care products grew in popularity, the creators noticed that their sales were coming mainly from word-of-mouth referrals, rather than through their own advertising efforts.  So, in a surprising and risky move, Rodan + Fields withdrew their products completely from the department store shelves in 2008.

In a risky wager, Rodan + Fields entered the direct-selling (MLM) market in hopes of better-utilizing word-of-mouth advertising.  Their creators believed that Rodan + Fields would become even more profitable and widespread if anyone could make a commission selling their products.

Their business model wager paid off.  Rodan + Fields now boasts over $1 billion in yearly revenue and has over 285,000 independent distributors in the U.S. and Canada.  In 2016, Euromonitor named Rodan + Fields the #1 Skincare product of the year, even.  Clearly, Rodan and Fields Skincare has really made a name for themselves.

Why, then, all the Rodan and Fields scam claims and Rodan and Fields pyramid scheme claims, then?

Clearly, business is booming for Rodan and Fields Skincare.  Yet, the same can also be said of Mary Kay, and Mary Kay is, without a doubt, a scam.

Like Rodan and Fields, Mary Kay also boasts over a billion in yearly sales.  Mary Kay has been around for a lot longer, too: a whopping 45 years.  They hold a good public image, too.  However, upon our research, we deem Mary Kay’s business model to be a complete and utter scam for its distributors. (Shocking, I know!).  You can read all about it, here.

So, just because a company’s consultants are bringing in tons of sales for the company does not mean that the business model pays them well.  Also, just because a company can afford a good legal team which keeps them out of legal trouble does not mean the company is ethical.  And lastly, just because a company maintains a good public image at large doesn’t mean that its distributors aren’t suffering under-cover in a hidden pyramid scheme, or failing, miserably.

mary kay review, project runway adTrust us when we tell you, Mary Kay is a scam.  99.5% of their distributors do not make more than $100 profit a year.  That equates to only 1 in every 200 of their salespeople that are even able to recoup their initial $100 sign-up fee.  OMG!

You wouldn’t guess it though, would you?

That’s where Bankroll Breakthrough reviews pay off.  We dig up the bones and save you the effort and the headache.

The big question, here, is:  Like, Mary Kay, is Rodan and Fields a scam, too? You’re about to find out.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  REPUTATION AND ETHICS:

rodan and fields review, the goodRodan + Fields is a member of the Direct Selling Association and abides fully by its strict code of ethics.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicThe company, itself, is up for sale.

Rodan and Fields is currently pursuing a sale with Wells Fargo.  It’s not a deal-breaker, but does make us want to take a closer look at Rodan and Fields scam claims.  Furthermore, the company attempting to change leadership makes us all the more concerned about all the Rodan and Fields pyramid scheme claims, as well.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicR + F pushes that their products are non-toxic.  This is not true.

Rodan and Fields skin care products contain cancer-causing ingredients, allergy-inducing ingredients, pesticides, formaldehyde, and more.  Yeah, so much for ‘skin care’.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicR +F does not take responsibility for the harsh, allergy-inducing, and toxic ingredients that their products contain that cause negative health reactions.

This has been made quite clear through hundreds of negative Rodan and Fields reviews.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  RODAN AND FIELDS REVIEWS:  OVERALL CONSUMER SATISFACTION:

Despite a small portion of raving Rodan and Fields reviews, most  are not positive.  In our estimation, only 20% of Rodan and Fields reviews in comment blogs are positive.  That does not speak well of the company as a whole.  This is especially true when you consider that the overwhelming majority of positive Rodan and Fields reviews are left by their own independent distributors who have profit-driven agendas.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: RODAN AND FIELDS REVIEWS AND CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS:

The majority of Rodan and Fields skin care complaints are due to these five recurring problems:

rodan and fields review, thumbs down Customers often suffer negative health reactions from the toxic and stringent chemicals in Rodan and Fields skin care products.

Worse, many of these unfortunate customers are given counterproductive health advice by their rep, after the fact.  Even more deplorable, some are treated badly by Rodan and Fields’ own on-call nurse.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicThe company provides terrible customer service to both customers and their consultants.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphic Rodan and Fields refuses to stop auto-shipping their products.

Some customers have even had to send legal ‘Cease and Desist’ letters to stop products from coming to their home and being charged for them.  If that doesn’t bring merit to Rodan and Fields scam claims, we don’t know what will.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicThere are a ton of illegal credit card charges which brings merit to Rodan and  Fields scam claims.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicCustomers struggle to receive refunds from the company.

Many Rodan and Fields reviews say that they were told they ‘didn’t try hard enough to make the product work for them’.  Others left negative Rodan and Fields reviews after they never received the refunds that were supposedly issued to them.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicRodan + Fields also ranks very far down at #79 for MLMs on BestCompany.com.   They receive only a 3.3 ranking out of 10, too.  OUCH!

Rodan  + Fields Compensation Plan

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:

THE GOOD:

rodan and fields review, the goodThe cost to join Rodan and Fields is low:

The minimum cost to become a Rodan + Fields Consultant is $45 for a Business Portfolio.  However, you will be strongly encouraged to purchase a Business Kit:

  • Personal Results Kit – $395
  • Big Business Launch Kit – $695
  • RFx Express Business Kit – $995

The business kit will provide you with products to have on hand to showcase to potential customers, as well as marketing materials to help you off to a more-successful start.  More importantly, these more-expensive options are required to earn the maximum commissions and/or bonuses within Rodan + Fields.   (And by the way, we *aren’t* against business start-up costs, as long as the numbers crunch in the end!  So many ‘free to join’ opportunities come at the highest of costs that they are the worst business ‘opportunities’ out there…).

rodan and fields review, the goodCommissions and bonuses are available:

Independent distributors can earn 25% commissions on product sales with Rodan + Fields’s hybrid compensation plan. Additionally, a Rodan and Fields consultant can earn 15% commissions on the revenue of their personally-recruited team members, plus 5% commissions on revenue generated down to the fifth generation in their downline.  Rodan + Fields also offers other financial incentives, including fast start bonuses, exotic trips, and a luxury car program.

rodan and fields review, the good R + F offers a 60-day refund policy on their products and business kits:

(This sounds like a winner. However, there are numerous customer service complaints and negative Rodan and Fields reviews that state that receiving refunds on products and business kits is a nightmare.  So, be aware of this before purchasing!)

rodan and fields review, the good R + F offers Discounts for Preferred Customers Members:

Preferred Rodan + Fields customers are eligible to receive up to 10% off product purchases and free shipping. They also receive exclusive access to product promotions and enhanced customer service.  In order to become a preferred customer, the company charges a one-time enrollment fee of $19.95 and requires the first product purchase to be worth at least $80.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicIs Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: MONTHLY SALES REQUIREMENTS ARE HUGE COMPARED TO PROFITABILITY:

There are monthly sales requirements that must be met each month to be eligible to receive commissions and maintain status ($100/month or $600/month).   This equates to a massive $1,200 a year, or $7,200 a year in products.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicIs Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: 3 out of 4 RODAN AND FIELDS CONSULTANTS MAKE LESS THAN $1,000 A YEAR, GROSS PROFIT.

Worse, to even be eligible for compensation, they must spend $100 each month in minimum purchases!

That means these Rodan and Fields skincare consultants are far-outspending any profit they are making, by purchasing R + F products.   They are ending up in the red each month.  Clearly, this is NOT a profitable business model for them,  and gives merit to Rodan and Fields pyramid scheme claims.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicIs Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: LESS THAN 1/5 of R + F CONSULTANTS MANAGE TO MAKE MORE THAN $1,000 A YEAR IN GROSS PROFITS.  EEK!

In order to make more than $1,000 a year in gross profit, Rodan and Fields skin care consultants must sell a minimum of $600, monthly.  This equates to selling $7,200 in products a year, or more.  If these consultants are inconsistent in their sales, they will have to purchase R + F products on their own dime, in order to maintain their status.

As a Rodan and Fields skincare consultant, if you are fortunate enough to outdo 77% of all R + F consultants to make more than $1,000 a year, this $600 monthly sales quota will apply to you.

Think about this logically—Do you know enough people who will be interested in Rodan and Fields skin care products to sell $600 or more, each and every month?  If your answer is ‘No’, we suggest you suggest you move on from R + F as a business opportunity.  We suggest this one.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicIs Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: RODAN AND FIELDS SKINCARE USES MANY CANCER-CAUSING AND TOXIC INGREDIENTS IN THEIR PRODUCTS:

Rodan + Fields markets their products as non-toxic.  However, this couldn’t be farther from the truth!

Rodan and Fields skincare products contain cancer-causing ingredients, allergy and asthma-inducing ingredients, chemicals known to cause liver and kidney failure, and more.

Just because the FDA has not yet banned these chemicals does not mean they are ‘safe’ or ‘non-toxic’.  When the Toxic Substances Control Act was passed in 1976, it placed the burden of testing chemicals for consumer products on the FDA.  Since that time, 80,000 chemicals have been added to American products.  Yet, only 200 have been actually tested by the FDA.  So, the FDA is a horrible measurement tool to gauge toxicity.

Here are just a few examples:

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  RODAN AND FIELDS SKIN CARE CONSULTANTS ARE UNDER-INFORMED:

Check this out: An R + F consultant took the time to create a webpage condemning polyethylene beads in cosmetics.  She claims R + F products are safer and superior, and markets a specific R + F product that does not contain polyethylene beads.  Yet, several Rodan and Fields skin care products DO contain polyethylene beads!  She is clearly not familiar with the products she is marketing.

In the scheme of things, you might view this err as ‘not all that bad’. But, it should, however, make you stop and consider how easily you could fall into this trap:  You, very well, will become the same well-intending Rodan and Fields consultant pushing Rodan and Fields skincare products that directly jeopardize the health of your friends and family.  SO MANY, (if not all), of Rodan and Fields skin care products contain toxic and cancer-causing ingredients that it is impossible to ignore.  Here is a better solution than selling R + F.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: RODAN AND FIELDS SKINCARE PRODUCTS CONTAIN STRINGENT SKIN IRRITANTS:

Besides being toxic and cancer-causing, many of the listed ingredients listed on the Rodan + Fields corporate website are known to create skin irritation and cause allergic reactions.  For example, the oil from the plant perilla ccymoides is believed to cause contact dermatitis.  Furthermore, there are many non-disclosed ingredients in Rodan and Fields skin care products, as well.  This becomes a serious problem for many people trying Rodan and Fields skincare products for the first time.

rodan and fields review, the bad, thumbs down graphicIs Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?: THE LEGAL BURDEN IS ON YOU!:

If you are promoting and selling these hazardous healthcare products to others, you are placing the legal burden on YOURSELF when those who purchase from you suffer negative health effects.

In fact, it is common knowledge that R + F deflects blame for negative health reactions onto their independent distributors.  R + F even employs a phone-in nurse to deflect such health matters.  Many, many Rodan and Fields reviews and Rodan and Fields skin care complaints state that the nurse places the blame fully onto the independent distributor who sold the product.

If you are not a dermatologist or certified healthcare professional along with the proper insurance coverage for any such legal issues, it is not wise to take on this liability. (Less wise, even more so, when you consider the small payout for such a venture.)

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  HERE’S 7 MORE REASONS WHY SELLING RODAN AND FIELDS SKINCARE PRODUCTS IS NOT PROFITABLE:

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #1.) RECRUITING REQUIRES SALES SKILLS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE:

rodan and fields review, craft showTo make money selling Rodan and Fields skin care products, you must consistently recruit new people underneath you. Recruiting requires sales skills that you may or may not have.

Also, recruiting requires an in-depth knowledge of Rodan and Fields skin care products to be able to effectively market them well.

Lastly, recruiting requires you to waste a lot of time pitching to people that will never be interested in joining you in selling Rodan and Fields skin care products, or buying them from you–ever.

SCARY STATISTIC: With network marketing companies like Rodan and Fields, 98% of people who join can only convince TWO OTHERS to join. That isn’t nearly enough to make any sort of living from, clearly.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #2: YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY ARE JUST NOT ENOUGH LEADS.

If you plan on making more than $1,000 a year selling Rodan and Fields skin care products, you will have to sell $600 every single month, in product.  Do you have the ability to sell at that kind of level–consistently?  77% of R + F consultants don’t.  That makes us seriously consider, “Is Rodan and Fields a Scam?”

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #3: AUTO-SHIPPED PRODUCTS WILL EAT AWAY YOUR PROFITS.

rodan and fields review, heavy boxes of auto-shipped productsI don’t know about you, but I have zero interest in storing a never-ending, growing hoard of Rodan and Fields skincare products just to keep my membership active.  Nor do I want to be going up to $600 in the hole each month, if I can’t meet their quota.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #4: RODAN AND FIELDS SKIN CARE PRODUCTS CONTAIN KNOWN TOXIC INGREDIENTS AND CARCINOGENS, as mentioned in detail, above.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #5:  RODAN AND FIELDS SKIN CARE PRODUCTS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY OVERPRICED.

burning money, https://bankrollbreakthrough.com

Let’s not forget that the same dermatologists that created Rodan and Fields skin care products also sell the very popular ProActiv line at a fraction of the price.  This competing product line is marketed at teenagers instead of adults, but uses the same ingredients.  This makes selling the Rodan and Fields skin care line a lot harder.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #6: COMPETITION FROM OTHER SOURCES LIKE AMAZON MAKES SELLING RODAN AND FIELDS SKIN CARE PRODUCTS A LOT HARDER:

Quicker and free shipping, easier, and free returns are offered through other sources, like Amazon.  This is bound to make your sales job a lot harder.

Amazon offers Rodan and Fields skin care products.  Even better,  they also offer better alternatives that are premium all-natural, and most-importantly, non-toxic.

Of course, Amazon offers two-day shipping and returns for their Prime members, as well as further price discounts by utilizing their ‘Subscribe & Save’ program.  With Amazon’s ‘Subscibe and Save ‘ program, you can choose to skip or turn off shipments with the click of a mouse.  Your lawyer won’t need to send a cease and desist letter to Amazon, either, just to stop their products from showing up at your door.

Here is an eye-opening Rodan and Fields review left on September 6, 2016, by Brooke:

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:  PITFALL #7: RODAN AND FIELDS LACKS CORE BUSINESS-MODEL TRAINING:

Last on our current list of really obvious setbacks in this Rodan and Fields review is actually the most important one of all!   (So take warning!)

Rodan and Fields does not effectively teach you the nuts and bolts of becoming successful in building your own online business empire from the ground up.  Nor will Rodan and Fields teach you how to scale their business model in any super-lucrative way.

rodan and fields review, fishing for dollarsHow can we put this nicely?

Rodan and Fields will teach you the inefficient method of how to fish for their customers using a fishing pole, one fish at a time.  They will not teach you how to cast large fishing nets for yourself, capable of earning you a 7-figure income or more, online.  This lack of core training causes most consultants to falter, and leads to so many Rodan and Fields pyramid scheme claims (for good reason).

Rodan and Fields will not teach you how to scale your business so that you can, in effect, run multiple fisheries later on down the road.   THIS is where the REAL money in online marketing lies: in learning how to cast large fishing nets, not in selling Rodan and Fields skincare products, one bottle at a time.  That inefficient method is for amateurs, no offense.

Is Rodan and Fields a Scam? Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:      OUR FINAL VERDICT

rodan and fields review, thumbs downNot Good.  Even though Rodan and Fields  utilizes a good business strategy and was created by dermatologists, their products contain cancer-causing, toxic ingredients that cause bad reactions.  Also, the Rodan and Fields skin care products are extremely expensive.  When you look at the ingredients, themselves, you can find safer, non-toxic alternatives at a much lower price, even at your local drugstore.

Furthermore, Rodan and Fields reviews are not inspiring, and there are a ton of Rodan and Fields scam claims, as well as tons of Rodan and Fields pyramid scheme claims.  The Rodan and Fields products don’t have great ratings, and the company suffers from exceptionally poor customer service.

rodan and fields review, empty pocketsWorse, as we pointed out from the Rodan and Fields income disclosure statement, selling their products will not make you wealthy.   77% of R + F independent consultants make $1,000 a year or less, and they are forced to spend $1,200 a year in purchases to make those meager profits.  We also learned that the average Rodan and Fields consultant spends about $1,000 a month in order to maintain their status in the business.  These terrible stats bring merit to Rodan and Fields scam claims.  And while we haven’t seen anything directly linking them to pyramid scheme claims, profitability is just awful enough to make it not even matter in the end.

melaleuca review, symbol toxic wasteHealth-wise, by joining R + F, you will be applying to your face and body some rather scary cancer-causing chemicals, the active ingredient in anti-freeze, pesticide, and formaldehyde.

Business-wise, you are legally liable for the negative health effects suffered by your friends and family once you sell them these products as a Rodan and Fields consultant.

melaleuca review, monopoly broke, pay poor taxLastly, regarding creating a future income for yourself, if you’ve never sold anything online or haven’t already mastered the foundation and principles of scaling an online business, selling Rodan and Fields skin care products will NOT be that life-changing opportunity you are searching for.

So, is Rodan and Fields a Scam?  Is Rodan and Fields a Pyramid Scheme?:

Well, for the large majority of people who attempt to earn money selling it, it will become an epic business failure, if nothing else.  So, you be the final judge.

red arrows

18 Replies to “IS RODAN AND FIELDS A SCAM? From their products to the biz, we dish the dirt!”

  1. I wouldn’t be quick to term Rodan and Fields an outright scam. However, R&F business model leaves a lot to be desired. The ever-present risk of having fewer sales and the implications in terms of lower commissions and status was a huge turnoff for me. I’d rather not get involved in a business where I have to constantly worry about almost every aspect of it.

  2. It gets frustrating when you have to cough up a substantial amount of money to purchase Rodan and Fields pricey skin care products and at the end, what you get barely works (a far cry from the ads). Add the time spent trying out the product and you realize you’ve just been pulled a fast one.

  3. Rodan and Fields have an attractive product that claims to fix skin care issues. This appeals to the consumers. What consumers don’t realise is, in trying to fix a problem you end up getting more serious issues via cancer-causing ingredients used in product formulation. Having no health disclaimers on product packages is clearly deceptive.

  4. It is dishonest for R&F to pass off a product that clearly impacts health negatively, as safe for use. A product with substantial quantities of cancer-causing and toxic ingredients such as polyethylene beads, hydroquinone, formaldehyde, propylene glycol and parabens, poses a debilitating health risk to consumers. This is bad.

  5. As a distributor of healthcare products, I wouldn’t in my right frame of mind add Rodan and Fields product to the ones I market. Why, with R&F, the risk of legal actions emanating from the adverse reaction of products are quite high. I wouldn’t want to deal with such a liability considering the low payout for marketing R&F products.

  6. What a way to make you miserable by having obnoxious customer care representatives blame you for innocently using products you felt would be helpful. The last thing I’ll want to deal with is having to be blamed for effects/implications that were no faults of mine. Well, with Rodan and Fields, I’ll pass.

  7. Never really had an issue with Rodan & Fields. But If I had an opportunity to advice R&F after reading this review, I’ll say, “take away those cancer-causing ingredients”. It looks scary. I’ll have to pay more attention to product labels. I’ll be on the lookout for those ingredients.

  8. Wow, this is an incisive and comprehensive review. Thanks for the heads-up. Now I know how to get this unrelenting R&F marketer off my back. I am going to send her this web link right away. I’ve got to trust my instincts more. I’ve been skeptical about this business model. Thanks a bunch.

  9. It’s intriguing to note that despite all of these shortcomings on the part of Rodan and Fields, they still make substantial sales and profit year in year out. This gets me wondering why there aren’t relevant regulations to check this faulty practices. Consumers need to be protected. I hope this gets addressed sooner than later.

  10. R&F’s business model is unfair. It leaves the other party worse off. A business model that puts so much responsibility and liability on its consultants and distributors is far from ideal. In addition, the chances of you getting wealth from marketing R&F products is insignificant. Good for R&F, bad for marketers.

  11. A lovely article you’ve got hear. I did enjoy reading through. Thankfully, I’ve had no dealings with Rodan & Fields either as a consumer of beauty products or a consultant. I’d love to see you make a review about other top brands like Estée Lauder, Olay, and Neutrogena. By the way, you two look adorable.

  12. I don’t seem to understand why Rodan and Fields products are pegged at such high prices. There is no clinical confirmation that the products give better results than lower priced equivalent. Just some really bogus claim bandied around by the company and its consultants. A good way to get scammed. Thanks for this review.

  13. Rather than train consultants and arm them with the right information about the products they sell, consultants are trained on how to recruit other uninformed individuals to sell R&F products. There’s basically little or no training on business ethics and application of the products.

  14. A lot of these companies prey on people’s insecurities. They advertise products they claim works like magic. Wrinkles, ageing and weight loss are the most common issues they target. No doubt, these issues are common. There is so much deception out there.

  15. I know for sure that there are great and safer alternatives out there at a reduced price. I don’t see anything special about Rodan and Fields product mix. Not going to use it or recommend to anyone.
